Will Self-Driving Cars Replace Human Error?

The public is understandably skeptical when it comes to the introduction of new technologies. This has been a constant in virtually every innovation since the dawn of civilization. People were skeptical about the railroads when they first became a staple of American life in the 1830s. People were skeptical about aviation when it became a major part of travel in the early part of the 20th century.

The automobile itself was viewed with a healthy dose of scorn and hesitation when it first drove onto the scene. Today, we find ourselves in a similar situation with regard to the emergence of self-driving vehicles. Just like with these other technologies, some of our skepticism is caused by the novelty of the technology and our unfamiliarity with it. However, just as it was with the transportation modes listed above, many of our reservations are well-founded and stem from shortcomings that the technology has yet to overcome.

Still, the bigger question that we find ourselves asking is:  Will we be safer in self-driving vehicles than we would be in vehicles that have a human driver?

Human Error Causes Vehicle Crashes

The vast majority of crashes on our roads are caused by human error. Some estimates put this figure at around 90 percent. We experience this firsthand every single day on our roads. Consider how many crashes are caused by reckless driving, distraction, fatigue, and intoxication. In each of these cases, it is a person’s mistake that leads to a vehicle crash.

People are far from perfect, and we make mistakes regularly. When these mistakes occur on our roads, the consequences can be devastating. One mistake made at 55 miles per hour can cause fatalities, serious injuries and incredible amounts of property damage. In that sense, the less we can be subject to lapses in judgment or negligent driving, the safer we will be.

How Do Self-Driving Cars Stack Up Against People?

Thus far, there is not enough information available to make a completely accurate comparison of automated vehicles and human drivers. Think about how many miles people have driven since the launch of the automobile and how many miles have been traveled by self-driving vehicles. This disparity leaves us with an incomplete picture. However, self-driving automobiles have been around long enough for us to get a clearer idea of how safe these vehicles could be and what dangers they could present if manufacturers don’t do their due diligence.

Last year, Google touted the fact that its self-driving vehicles had traveled well over a million miles and been involved in only 17 crashes, all but one of which were found to be caused by another driver’s error. Meanwhile, Tesla, another company that has a big stake in the self-driving automobile industry, has come under fire from critics about its aggressive implementation of automated technology after the death of a driver in Florida in May of 2016. In September, the New York Times reported a similar incident involving a Tesla automobile that occurred in China earlier this year. The criticism from safety advocates is largely over the company’s willingness to make available technology that has not been thoroughly tested. While these were reportedly the first driver deaths in over 130 million miles of travel, it still raises a debate about the degree to which automation will be deemed safe for drivers.

Concerns About Semi-Autonomous Vehicles

Part of the skepticism about automated technology stems from automobiles that will be only partially operated by a vehicle and handed over to a human driver in case of emergency. In certain types of automated vehicles, such as vehicles equipped with Tesla’s Autopilot function, drivers must still be aware enough to take over driving duties in certain situations. This might prove to be a difficult task for drivers, and it could even require a certain level of proficiency or training on the part of a vehicle’s operator.

It should also be noted that we already have some forms of automation in many of our vehicles. Automated braking has been used in vehicles for several years and has likely helped reduce the occurrence of many crashes. There is great promise for more automation, but there are still many unanswered questions.

Accountability Will Always Be a Central Issue

Just as it is in today’s human-operated vehicles, crashes in tomorrow’s self-driving cars will stem from some sort of error. Today, it is usually the drivers who are held accountable for their mistakes, but as self-driving automobiles become a bigger presence on our roads, that accountability will be shifted to other entities. Rather than human error is to blame, it might be the case that a particular crash will be deemed to be the fault of a vehicle manufacturer, or a software manufacturer. For the safety of all drivers, accountability will be a very important issue, one that will need to be fought for and pursued by the institutions providing oversight and regulation, and by drivers and citizens themselves.

The Self-Driving Revolution is Beginning

People might be reluctant to embrace self-driving technology, but it will be thrust upon them whether they are ready for it or not. In Pittsburgh, for example, Uber has launched self-driving vehicles in a pilot program. Uber’s chief rival in the ridesharing world, Lyft, has said that our roads will be filled with automated vehicles in five years, and the company is taking its own steps toward releasing self-driving cars.

Several companies are locked in a fight to be first when it comes to self-driving vehicles. This competition will no doubt lead to the rapid advancement of the technology. As consumers, we have to hope that the release of the technology is not hasty and that road safety is the top priority.

The Future of Our Roads

People are debating when, and not if, self-driving vehicles will become the norm. It’s only a matter of time before more vehicles will be completely or at least mostly operated by automated systems. We know from the history of transportation technology that we can expect certain things. We can expect resistance, adoption, innovation, and missteps in the implementation of the technology. We can also expect that one day soon we will be riding in, or sharing our roads with, self-driving cars.

However, don’t rush and buy just about any motorcycle that you see. Here are things to consider before buying your first motorcycle. 1. Your Needs: When it comes to buying a vehicle, your needs should be your priority. Consider all your needs when choosing a motorbike to purchase. This includes the traffic on the route that you take every day as well as the distance that you take on a daily basis. By taking your needs into account, you can save yourself from feelings of regret later. 2. Your Type: There are many different types of motorcycles. Choose a certain type of motorcycle that fits your style of driving. If you just want a regular type of bike, choose the standard types of motorcycle. Although they don’t have big builds and super-sized machines, they’re great because they’re flexible and approachable. If you’re a professional car driver who wants to outrun cars on the road, you might want to go for sports bikes, like a harley-davidson livewire. However, they’re not the best choice for beginners. If you want a bike but still want the comforts of a car, touring bikes could be great for you. These types of cars have some of the features of a car such as GPS, windscreens, stereos, automatic transmissions, and carrying capacities. The above-mentioned types of motorcycles are only a few of the many of them. It will be great for you to make your research before finding a bike to purchase. 3. Your Size: This one is a no-brainer. Motorcycles come in different sizes and shapes. Choose one that fits your size and builds. Don’t choose one that is too small or too big for you; this will only get in the way of your comfortability. To be sure, try a motorcycle on for sizing, or if possible, take it for a short ride. This will give you a clue about the ergonomics of a bike and how it fits the figure of your body. 4. Your Options: There can be thousands of different motorcycles on the market today, and each has different features that may or may not attract you. Because you have a long list of options, you may have a hard time making your final buying decision. To save time, only pay attention to the ones that could be the most beneficial to you and your needs. 5. Your Long-Term Budget: When buying a motorcycle, you’re spending money not only on purchasing the vehicle but also on maintaining it on a regular basis. This is why it’s so important to estimate all the expenses associated with owning a bike like a car cover, protectors, luggage, etc. Your total expenses may include the cost of your safety gear. The moto expert has a variety of high-quality helmets, jackets, pants, and gloves that you can choose from. The cost of regular maintenance may also add up to your total outlays. You might also want to consider your oil consumption every day. While it may not be that costly, it can greatly affect your economic stability in the long run. The idea is to be able to assess yourself whether you can handle all the financial responsibilities of owning a vehicle. 6. Your Preferences: After taking all the necessary considerations, it’s time to think of your own preferences. What brand, color or shape do you want? What level of engine performance do you prefer? What parts and accessories do you want your bike to have? Since this will be your first ever motorcycle, don’t think twice about giving yourself exactly what you want. Although your needs come first, you shouldn’t forget about your wants.  Conclusion These are the things to consider before buying your first motorcycle. Buying A Tractor? Here Are the Things That You Need to Consider

The importance of technology and mechanization in agriculture cannot be overstated. Tractors are among the machinery being used today in modern farming for ploughing, tilling, planting seeds, spreading fertilizer, landscape maintenance, lawn care, and much more. Tractors come with an advantage in farming as they are versatile, easy to operate, and durable as power engines run them.    Tractors can be complicated, and if you have no experience with them, you may have no clue what to consider when choosing a tractor for your farm. TRADUS.COM is a platform where you can find all the heavy machinery you need, even for your farm. The platform hosts vetted and verified professional sellers and buyers, allowing them to share their machinery information. TRADUS boasts a wide range of features that help buyers find the right equipment at fair prices and, through artificial intelligence, helps them compare the specifications of the equipment and prices.   Whether you are shopping for a tractor at TRADUS or anywhere else, here are the factors that you should put into consideration before you make your purchase. Buying A Tractor? Here Are the Things That You Need to Consider: 1. The engine It is important to note that your tractor is only as powerful as the engine it has. This is why the engine is the first thing you should be looking at. The engine determines the horsepower of the tractor and the kind of work the tractor can handle. The higher the horsepower, the more power the tractor has. It is essential to be in touch with the type of work the tractor is expected to handle; then, from there, a professional will help you point out the engine's size that would be ideal.   2. Your budge Tractors can cost an arm and a leg, which makes it a significant investment. As expected, you need to have a budget to guide you to get what you are looking for in a tractor. You do not want to purchase a tractor then you are left with no money, even for maintenance.   Note that this does not mean that you should go for the lowest cost available in the market. Have a budget, and a professional will guide you in finding the best tractor that will meet your farming needs within your price range. Also, when it comes to the price, you might want to consider paying more upfront then complete the remaining amount with time until you complete the purchase. This will ease the financial burden that may come with it.   4. Hydraulics The hydraulics of a tractor is something you should consider when buying the machinery. Note that the work of the tractor on the farm involves a lot of turning and lifting. The hydraulic system is what makes this possible. The hydraulic fluid transmits energy through the hydraulic system making it possible for the tractor to move and work. The hydraulic fluid is also responsible for lubrication and control heat transfer.   Before you take a tractor home, ensure that the hydraulic system is functioning optimally. If you are not conversant with how tractors work, it is best that you also involve a professional in assessing a tractor's hydraulic capabilities. Whether it is used tractors or new ones, they should be able to turn easily and lift attachments.   4. Tires Tractors can do the heavy work thanks to the traction provided by its tires. If you are buying a used tractor, this is something you want to consider to avoid having to buy new tires after a short while of use (they can be expensive). Ensure that the tires are ideal for the horsepower of the tractor and the load weight. Between bias and radial tires, you should consider the later as they have better traction even though they might cost slightly more.    At this juncture, you might want to involve a farm tire expert to give you the best advice on what to choose.    5. Rollover protection While it is essential to look at the functionality of a tractor, it is also vital to think about the driver's safety when operating the tractor. Note that tractors at times rollover during operations. A cage or roll-bar around the operator would provide the operator with increased safety.   There are tons of other things to consider when buying a tractor, such as the hitches and transmission, to mention a few. To get the best deal and quality machinery, it is essential to buy from a reliable dealer.
