Essential Tips for Preventing Railroad Crossing Accidents

Railroad crossings are designed to prevent accidents. The United States has over 200,000 miles of track, so drivers must know the potential hazards of these crossings. With the right safety precautions, you can avoid accidents on or near railroads.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported 1,500 collisions between vehicles and trains in 2021, which injured and killed hundreds of individuals. Never race across the railroad tracks when there is an oncoming train. People must realize that the cost of speeding to beat a train can be extremely high.

In this article, you will learn about tips on how to avoid railroad crossing accidents. Moreover, this article will describe how to implement those tips properly to ensure safety. Furthermore, you will learn about how to stay aware of railroads. Hence, to learn more, read on to the end of the article.

Tips to Avoid Railroad Crossing Accidents

Keep the following tips in mind when approaching a railway crossing:

1. Obey Warning Signs

All railroad crossings have warning signs and signals. This helps to let drivers and pedestrians know they are approaching an area where trains may be present. Generally, you will find flashing red lights and gates in those areas.

For instance, when the gate is coming down or is already down, you must stay away from the crossing. Basically, you need to ensure that you are at a safe distance. Also, don’t try to drive around or through the gate.

In short, obey all warning signals because they indicate a train is coming.

2. Look Both Ways

Before crossing a street, everyone looks both ways to check whether a vehicle is coming or not. In fact, you must do the same when you drive through railroad crossings.

Generally, trains go both ways on tracks. So, you must check both sides before continuing over the tracks. Moreover, you must take extra care when the visibility is low, such as at night or when the weather is bad. This way, you can prevent accidents.

3. Never Stop a Car on the Tracks or Try to Move It Away

When you are passing through railroad tracks, you must never stop on them. However, if your car accidentally stalls, get out of it as quickly as possible and move away from the vehicle. Also, you must avoid pushing the car to try to move it.

Generally, a train cannot stop quickly since it is really heavy. Also, the engineer controlling the train will not know that a vehicle is in its path until it is too late to take action.

4. Avoid Walking on Railroad Tracks

It is illegal for pedestrians to walk on railroad tracks. Moreover, it is extremely dangerous to do so. Hence, you must always walk through pedestrian crossing areas and obey warning signals.

Additionally, railroad tracks are often slippery, and the surface isn’t even, increasing the likelihood of pedestrians falling. They may not be able to get out of the path of a train quickly if they fall.

5. Remain Behind Crossing Gates

Driving around a crossing gate may be tempting, especially when a train is not visible. Avoid doing so, as the crossing gate is a safety measure designed to keep people from harm.

However, if you really need to cross, wait for the gate to rise and then proceed across the tracks. This way, you can ensure safety.

6. Stay a Safe Distance From the Tracks

Always stay a safe distance from the tracks. For instance, many cars can be between the engine and the caboose. Hence, you must never drive or walk close to the tracks.

7. Don’t Assume a Train Will Stop

Trains aren’t required to stop at railroad crossings, so drivers cannot assume they will. Obey the warning signals and wait patiently until the train stops. Basically, trains are heavy and fast. Hence, they need a lot of track to stop.

Therefore, you must provide trains with the right of way to avoid a big accident.

8. Pay Attention to Your Surroundings

Also, be aware of your surroundings when you approach a railroad crossing. Moreover, you must look for anything unusual or suspicious. Also, point out to authorities if you see something out of place.

For instance, if you find out something that doesn’t belong on the tracks, you must report it to the appropriate authorities.

9. Maintain Vehicles

You must maintain your vehicles to reduce the risk of your car stalling on the tracks. However, if the car still stalls, exit the vehicle immediately. Then, move to a safe distance from the tracks to avoid being hit by debris if a train collides with it.

10. Train Children to Be Aware of Railroad Crossings

Teach children railroad safety from a young age. Tell them about the dangers of playing on or around railroad tracks. Have them learn the warning signals and what they mean to keep them safe. Hence, you can ensure their safety when they somehow come near a railroad crossing.

How to Ensure Safety near a Railroad Crossing?

The following are the steps you must follow if you want to ensure safety at a railroad crossing:

  1. Always expect trains to come on the railroad. Hence, when you cross the railroad, do it quickly or avoid it. This is because trains are fast and heavy. So you will not get enough time to react.
  2. If the light at the crossing is red and the gates are lowered, avoid crossing the railroad. Also, check for the flagman to look for signals.
  3. Look at both sides when you are crossing a railroad. Never assume that trains are coming from only one direction.
  4. After a train passes, wait for the signal to go green and the gates to go up fully. Then, you can cross the railroad.

Children Go Missing

How Many Children Go Missing in the US Every Year?

For parents, nothing is more important than the safety and security of their children. They do everything they can to provide their children with the best life possible. Therefore, it can be incredibly stressful when a child goes missing. Even though parents may lose track of their child in a grocery store, may not know exactly where they are when they go to hang out with friends, and might even let teenagers go out on their own, most parents still have a general idea of where their children are located and what they are doing. When parents truly have no idea where their child is located, this can be overwhelming. Fortunately, missing children in the United States almost always make it home alive. Most Children Make It Home Alive The reality is this: more than 99 percent of children who go missing eventually come home alive. Thanks to technological advances in the way searches are conducted, and much greater awareness when it comes to quick action, the overwhelming majority of children who go missing are eventually recovered. In 1990, just 62 percent of children who went missing were recovered alive. In 2011, that rate had risen to 97 percent. Now, the rate is over 99 percent. This includes not only high-risk cases but also abductions by a stranger or family member who might be wanted on an arrest warrant. This rapid increase in successful recoveries has served as solace to the countless parents who deal with missing children every year. So, how many childrehn go missing every year in the United States. Every year, approximately 800,000 children are reported missing. This includes children who might be injured, lost, run away from home and those who are abducted. Out of the children who are abducted, approximately 200,000 are taken by family members. Usually, this takes place during a custody battle. Approximately 58,000 children who go missing involve non-members. These are usually people who are familiar with the child but have targeted that child for one reason or another. This could include someone who befriends the child over a long amount of time, a next-door neighbor, or even a friend of some sort. Even if the abduction is performed by a stranger, this usually is perpetrated by someone who has studied the child for an extended amount of time. They understand where the child goes, how the child behaves, and how the child responds to certain situations. If they are able to learn the schedule of the child, they can increase their chances of successfully abducting the child. In many cases, a child abduction is more an act of seduction than abduction. The child usually goes willingly with the adult in an effort to avoid drawing attention to the scene. That is why it is important for parents to think carefully about who their child to spending time with. That way, they can reduce their chances of their child being groomed and abducted by someone. How To React When a Child Goes Missing And parents realized that their child has gone missing, this can be an incredibly stressful experience. The first thing those parents want to do is to hit the streets and start looking for their children. After all, they know their child, that knows how their child behaves, and they know where their child might go. Even though this is a normal got response, it is always better to work with a professional law enforcement agency. A professional agency has the tools and training necessary to recover children as quickly as possible. Parents who need help networking with law enforcement agencies, particularly in the event of international parental kidnapping, to take a look at the resources that are available from The Committee for Missing Children. That way, parents understand that this is not something they have to go through on their own. The most important thing parents have to remember is that they need to listen to the law enforcement professionals. For example, law enforcement professionals are going to do a lot of things at once because they have the manpower to do exactly that. Law enforcement professionals are going to use technology to take a look at who the child might have been interacting with online. Parents do not know everything their children do on the internet. Take me to look at their internet history can be a great place to get started. It is also important to get as many pictures out there as quickly as possible. When people have some idea of what the child looks like, they can keep their eyes open as well. For example, pictures might be placed on shopping bags, toll booths, billboards, and even in some of the major shopping buildings. The more people who see the picture, the better. Law enforcement professionals have the manpower to get pictures up as quickly as possible. This will get people looking for the child, increasing the chance of the child being recovered alive. Ultimately, the most important reason my parents need to rely on law enforcement professionals is that time is of the essence. The numbers show that the percentage chance of successfully recovering a missing child drops with every hour that goes by. Therefore, it is important to cast a net as quickly as possible to prevent the child from getting away from the immediate geographical area. Law enforcement professionals understand how to blitz the streets quickly in order to find a missing child. That is why parents should reach out to law enforcement professionals as quickly as possible when they realize that their child has gone missing. This will maximize their chances of recovering their child. Read Also: Should You Send Your Child with Autism to a Regular Summer Camp? Style Your Child: How to Find Comfy and Cute Clothing for Kids

Can’t Go To The Beauty Salon In Lockdown? Here’s How Women Used To Do It

The global pandemic has impacted all of our lives, schools are shut, employees are working from home and our regular beauty treatments have been put on hold until further notice. Even if we haven’t got anywhere to go, it’s still important to take the time for some self-care, feeling glamorous, even at home, can be an instant mood lifter. Flawless Lashes by Loreta know some of us can’t even get to the shops at the moment and it began an interest in how women throughout history achieved that luscious long lash looks we all dream of. Lash extensions are the latest luxury fashionistas are having to do without, the next best thing is applying strip lashes. Check out the range of strip lashes offered by Flawless here. If you can’t get to your nearest beauty store, want to try something new (although some of these techniques we certainly don’t recommend!) or are simply curious about how women still managed to be glam even without the modern treatments we have today, keep reading. Ancient Egypt This is where makeup obsession began. You can’t get more dramatic than the intense eye makeup of the Ancient Egyptians. A copper ore known as malachite was used to create that famous green we associate with the people of the pyramids. It was crushed into a powder and applied in large quantities on the upper lid. Kohl was used to creating the sweeping black eyeliner and also provided the benefit of protection from the searing sun. It may surprise you to know this trend first started among men, the women quickly caught on not wanting to feel left out from this new fashion. It wasn’t reserved for the rich either, poorer families would still adorn this extravagant look. However, they didn’t have access to the more expensive application tools such as ivory or metal, instead, they settled for clay or sticks. Ancient Rome It wasn’t just fashionable to have long eyelashes in Ancient Rome, there was a deeper meaning behind it. It was believed that sex caused eyelashes to fall out, so to prove their chastity (or fool potential suitors)  Ancient Roman women would use kohl to create the illusion of longer, thicker lashes. Another alternative was burnt cork, using a small stick of ivory to meticulously apply this to their lashes. When Christianity began to rise in popularity, Christian women were discouraged from using cosmetics, opting for a more natural look. For centuries after, eyelash modification was forgotten about. The Elizabethans Just like we copy celebrity makeup trends today, people did the same centuries ago. The difference was the only real celebrities were royalty and it was expected that ladies of the upper-class were to follow the reigning monarch’s look, no matter how ridiculous. Queen Elizabeth, I certainly had a distinct look and this meant extreme measures were taken to copy her. Her pale complexion was sought after by ladies of the court but with few being born with the skin of a redhead, they turned to alternative measures. White lead and vinegar became the method of choice, not only was this extremely heavy on the skin, but it was also incredibly toxic. Some women even bled to death just so they could be fashionable. The queen’s famous red hair was the most enticing craze, wigs were the most popular choice but women wanted to copy Elizabeth down to every detail, including her red eyebrows and eyelashes. Oil was mixed with saffron, cumin seeds, and celandine for an at-home dye treatment. However, it was deemed ‘unacceptable’ to do this so many women had to attempt this beauty regime in private. Considering high-class women often had little knowledge of how to do anything themselves as they were used to being served by maids, it’s likely many suffered the consequences of this going wrong. The Victorians The Victorians are infamous for some grisly medical practices and the beauty salon is no different. You can’t get more Victorian than teaming painful procedures with dangerous drugs and that’s exactly how women of the time achieved long fluttering eyelashes. We definitely don’t recommend you do this one at home! Cocaine was used to numb the upper lid of the poor client, then individual human hairs were trimmed to size and sewn with a sewing needle through the epidermis. Thankfully this fad didn’t last for long, women across the globe can thank Eugene Rimmel for inventing the first mainstream mascara and creating the Rimmel brand that still stands strong today. This mascara was a mix of vaseline and coal, although it was worlds away from the precise mascara we see today, it was certainly a welcome alternative to poking eyelids with sharp objects. The early 1900s 1902 saw the first patent for false eyelashes registered and they certainly weren’t subtle. While they may have finally given women the long lashes they wanted, they were certainly far from perfect. More specifically, the glue needed a lot of work. They were made popular by the Hollywood actress Seena Own adorning them in Intolerance. The director, D.W Griffiths requested her lashes ‘brush her cheeks’ and they have become iconic for the era. Unfortunately, the glue caused irritation to Owen’s eyes and was hard to remove, it was so bad that her eyes swelled and they were glued shut. Griffiths didn’t regret his decision, especially as this reaction happened after all her scenes had been shot. So are you still feeling sorry for yourself not being able to visit the salon? Just think what these poor women had to endure in the name of fashion. While using a safe, natural makeup alternative could be a fun thing to try in lockdown, the other methods are definitely best left in the past.
