College Textbooks

How to Reduce the Cost of College Textbooks

Textbooks are a painful purchase for any student. Year after year, prices continue to rise, often resulting in textbook fees being added to the pile of crippling student loan debt facing the nation. Fortunately, there are some ways that you can reduce the cost of your books. College Textbooks can make things simple for a student.  There is almost never a need to buy a brand new textbook at full price, so explore your options before you commit to anything. Keep in mind that you shouldn’t plan on buying all of your books in one transaction because purchasing them individually will net the most savings. Forget the Campus Bookstore Unless you are bound by a tuition stipend or other financial means to purchase your books at the campus bookstore, stay away. This is the guaranteed way to pay the highest prices for textbooks, even when buying used. The bookstore used to be the source for students, but thanks to technology, there are plenty of other ways to get the books that you need for a lot less. The exception here is for research purposes; in most cases, the campus store is going to have the highest prices. However, there may be a rare occasion where they don’t. Feel free to call or visit and get a list of prices for the books that you need, just for the sake of comparison when you go online to shop around. Always Buy Used Unless there is a specific text you will keep forever or absolutely need the brand new edition of for some reason, buy your books used. These are at least ⅓ less than the cost of brand new books, and offer the same information on the pages. Some are in better condition than others, but most used resellers will provide condition information and pictures of the book you are purchasing so that you can see what you are actually getting. You can find thousands of used copies online at prices that you can afford. When you are buying used books, check out their resale value and the return policy of the seller you purchase from. Reselling your books after the semester is over is a great way to recoup some money that can go towards next semester’s books. Or, you can take the money and treat yourself for saving hundreds on your textbooks by buying used in the first place. The return policy is important because if a book arrives in unusable condition, you need to be able to send it back. Your class won’t be nearly as informative with a partial textbook, after all. Rent or Borrow Books The school or public library might have books that you need for classes. Before you spend a dime, look into these sources for common texts, literature books, and other texts available for you to borrow. Libraries are a great resource that often gets overlooked. The downside here is that you may only be able to borrow a book for a part of the semester. Ask about their renewal policies when considering this option. College Textbooks can make your life easier by all means. There is an increasing market in the campus bookstore realm for textbook rentals. This is another exception to the “avoid the bookstore” rule, of course. The most expensive texts are usually available for rental from your campus store, which might be the best financial option. Before you rent, though, make sure that you know what you are signing up for. Take extra good care of the books so that you aren’t charged for damage upon their return, or forced to purchase them outright (which is what you were trying to avoid in the first place). You can also rent textbooks online, or download ebook versions of the texts that you need for your college classes. Sell Your Old Books You can reduce the cost of your next semester’s textbook bill by selling your old books. Don’t sell them back to the campus bookstore, because they usually don’t offer much. Plus, you might only get credit to use in the store. Instead, consider selling them online or through community marketplaces. Advertise them around campus for other students, too. When you sell textbooks online, you can often choose the price and compare what others are selling. That gives you a better idea of how much you can actually earn. Feel free to look around and get a few different quotes before you commit. Most re-seller websites that buy college texts will allow you to enter the ISBN and get an estimate of how much you will get for the books you are selling. See where you can get the most money for your books, even if you have to sell them in a few different places. A Little Research Goes a Long Way Your college book purchases don’t have to break the bank. Whether you need to reduce the cost on the front end or just make up the difference and sell textbooks to help cut the costs, there are plenty of options available. Just give yourself a little time to explore your options. An extra hour of your time could save you hundreds, no matter what degree you are studying. Children Language Learning

5 Golden Rules of Children Language Learning

God has blessed every child with an innate skill as well as a curiosity to learn new things in a speedy manner. The brain of your child observes new things very quickly; that is why he starts understanding your language at the earlier stage of life. According to the statement of an expert, young children have a high intellectual level to learn a second language. If you want to teach your child any language, the following simplest yet useful rules are going to help you a lot. Active Adult Participation in The Language Learning Process: In the initial six years of life, the brain of the child increasingly changes to absorb more and more knowledge. For that reason, it is necessary that the adults take an active part in helping their child learn a new language. To serve that purpose, talking to your child matters the most in the first place. Both the parents can contribute to this learning process by listening to the fractured yet cute stories of their kids. Furthermore, the teacher should also act patiently when dealing with young children to make them easily understand some new words. For example, in the case of the Spanish language, the teacher has to repeat the Spanish alphabet sounds again and again for the child’s clear understanding. Ensure a Child-Friendly Learning Environment: Creating a child-friendly environment of learning is essential for your child’s smooth learning of a new language. It matters because children are sensitive little heads that whole-heartedly learn only when they feel listened to, valued and cared for. In order to ensure a child-friendly environment, adults are advised to organize fun-filled activities e.g., dance, sing, and rhyme etc. You can also take help from numerous online videos as well as audios that can make the learning process more appealing. Above all, every effort you make to teach your child a language will only work when you put yourself in your child’s shoe. You have to think and act like them to ensure effective learning. Involve the Children in Listening Activities: In addition to being receptive, language is expressive too. Therefore, it is vital to engage children in listening activities. In this way, they will be able to effectively process what they hear. Such listening activities can ask the child to repeat after the speaker whatever he/she has listened. To serve this purpose, parents can turn on a radio or TV where perhaps a fairy tale is being told. Teachers can also contribute to this type of activity by telling them a story or even a short real-life interesting incident just to introduce them to new words and sentences. Adding to it, many interesting rhyming audios with attractive sounds can add to the responsiveness of children to a great extent. They can also enhance the listening power of the children. Let Them “Maked the Made” Teaching a language to children requires patience and considerable time. When it comes to children, they certainly make too many mistakes in the beginning. They may be too little to understand the reasons behind all the forms of verbs, parts of speech, degrees that a particular language has. For instance, they may say ‘made’ rather than made, ‘eated’ instead of ate, ‘sleeped’ instead of slept and this list goes. In fact, making mistakes is good and perhaps the only way of letting children learn something new. Every mistake that they make tells that they tried a new thing. Now, it is the duty of the teacher to correct it with love and kindness. Take Baby Steps: Do not rush the learning process since it might confuse your child. In contrast, it is essential to take baby steps while teaching your child a new language. In the beginning, talk to them and tell them stories in the new language so they start understanding and recognizing different sounds. It will also make them able to pronounce the words in the right way later on. Subsequently, start enhancing their vocabulary by introducing a new word every day. Repeating it all day long and asking your child to do the same is effective for better memorization. In order to make this whole process effective, ask children to recall the previous words before introducing a new word. Afterward, start off with the phrases and then to sentences. In the end, patience and effort would be worth it. Read Also: Tips To Help You Learn A New Language In A New Country English As A Second Language: Ways To Find Great Teaching Materials On A Budget

GRE

Are You Ready for the GRE?

The GRE may be one of the most important tests that you take in your life. You have put in countless hours studying and taking practice tests, but the question is whether you are truly ready to take the test. As with any major exam, typically you have a strong idea of whether and when you are prepared and ready for the exam. Here are some signs that you are ready for the big day. Your Practice Scores Exceed Your Goals: Every test taker has a score in mind that is their target for the exam. Given that the best way to take the exam involves taking numerous practice exams, you should have an idea of where you are before the exam. It is a fact that the conditions of the actual exam may cause you to not perform as well as you would otherwise hope. This could be due to the pressure or the unfamiliarity of the setting. Therefore, you should have your practice scores slightly above your target. When these metrics exceed your target score, you have a good indication that you are ready for the exam. You Start Feeling Confident: When you are preparing for a clutch exam, you spend many hours in a state of panic. As you begin to get a handle on what you are doing, panic starts to be replaced with other emotions. This does not happen overnight. Instead, it takes countless long study sessions and a gradual process. It is unrealistic to expect a test taker to simply snap their fingers and change their mindset. This comes through hard work. After the extensive effort, fear gives way to confidence. When you actually believe that you can beat the exam, it comes after you have put in the necessary hard work and it means that you are prepared. Study Material Seems Rote: When studying for an exam, test takers should usually cover everything more than once. The first time that they read through the material, it seems new and there it will take some effort to gain familiarity and mastery over the material. As you begin to become more familiar with the material, it will come easier to you on each review. At a certain point, the material should be drilled into your head. At that point, when you read the material, you will have a strong sense of Deja vu. Then, you will know that the material has become second nature to you, and you are good to go to take the test. You Have Taken a Practice Course: GRE prep courses are a great way of preparing you to take the big exam, but like everything else, they cost money. When you take one of these classes, you gain the benefit of instruction and tips from experienced test takers. These classes follow and track the exams, and they will be able to tell you about recent trends with the exam. While some test-takers are certainly able to prepare themselves with a few practice exams and a study book, many people find that more is necessary. One option to accomplish this is free online GRE prep. This can save you money and give you the help you need for the exam. CAT 2018

CAT 2018 tougher than 2017; Paper Analysis by CAT Topper Rickshesh Manchanda

The Common Admission Test (CAT 2018) was conducted by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Calcutta on November 25 at various test centers across India. As per the candidates, the overall level of difficulty of the entrance examination was rated moderate to difficult which could have a direct impact on CAT Result. However, there are mixed reactions of students. Some candidates felt that the questions in the Verbal Section were difficult whereas some said that this section was the easiest. Some find Quantitative Aptitude as difficult whereas for some it was the easiest section. As per experts, the second slot of CAT 2018 was on a similar pattern to that of the first slot. The VARC section of CAT 2018 slot II was pretty easy. However, for some students, the DILR section of the second slot was difficult in comparison to the first slot. Quantitative Aptitude remained the toughest of all the sections. As per the statements were given by the CAT 2018 topper, Rickshesh Manchanda finds CAT 2018 tougher than the last year’s CAT. Rickshesh Manchanda has cracked two most competitive national level examinations i.e. JEE in 2014 and CAT in 2018. He said that he totally believes in self-study as it plays a significant role in one’s success. Even though Rickshesh cracked CAT 2017 with 99.99 percentile, he appeared again for CAT in November 2018 and this year, he is among the top 11 candidates who scored 100 percentile in CAT 2018. Rickshesh is an alumnus of IIT-Delhi and is currently working with a bank in Pune, Maharashtra. As per statements made by the CAT 2017 topper, he said that when he cracked CAT last year, he got a call from IIM-Calcutta. He needed some sort of work experience in order to boost his confidence, so he appeared for CAT again. Rickshesh found CAT 2018 tougher than 2017 and when he got 100 percentile, he got surprised. He also said that the DILR section of CAT 2018 was pretty difficult and also the Quantitative Aptitude Section was not the easier one. In comparison to the previous year’s CAT paper, the questions in the Quantitative Aptitude section were really very difficult. Manchanda said that he was less confident about the English section. He improved this section just by reading books and periodicals for a period of one year. As he was working, so it was pretty difficult for him to maintain the right balance between his job and his CAT preparation. It is not an easy task to top this one of the toughest examinations while doing a job, but, Rickshesh succeeded in cracking this test. In an interview, Rickshesh said that his basics were crystal clear and he was highly confident. But he also confessed that it was really very hard to find time to practice mock tests regularly. According to him, self-study is the only gateway to crack any competitive examination. It is also very important to revise the topics regularly and make a habit of making short notes of each and every topic that you study. He advised the CAT aspirants to keep revising all the important topics of CAT and appear for mock papers regularly in order to analyze their preparation. As per Rickshesh, he was not an extraordinary student. He was an average student in studies. He scored an aggregate of 88.8% in Class 12 examination and in 2014, he managed to crack JEE. As he was brought up in a Business woman’s family, he always wanted to set up his own company. He always thinks about plans of starting his own business on recycling waste for the sake of the environment. Candidates preparing for CAT 2019 must remember that they need to study very hard in order to get admission to top IIMs. The difficulty level of the CAT is increasing every year. So, students need to work pretty hard. Read Also: NEET 2018 Notification Delayed: Is It Due To MCI Amendments?

RESP

What can RESP be used for

Registered Education Saving Plan: A Registered Education Savings Plan also popular as RESP is a type of children education saving plan which is sponsored by the Canadian Government. This plan encourages the parents to invest in their educational future post their secondary education. It is a great initiation by the Government. And there is a provision of a contribution of a certain amount by the Government for children under age 18. The subscribers to this RESP don’t really get a tax deduction for their investment. It is completely free from taxes until the funds are taken out of paying for their child’s education. An RESP, allows Canadian parents to save their money for their university education since their birth. By getting into a bank, or other financial institutions they can open the RESP saving account by keeping their child as beneficiary. The ironic thing about this saving plan is in this apart from parents, their relatives and friends also make some contribution. How to use RESP? And, once your child completes the school education are opting for higher education, he receives the educational assistance payments known as EAPs. And this is one type of income for the child. The RESP fund can be withdrawn when the beneficiary or the concerned child is about to start a study program at a college, trade school, CEGEP or in specific institutes abroad. The RESP fund is valid for full time and part time studies. But the thing is, all those universities or institutions have to be in the list on the website of the Canadian Government. As a student or parents, you can also pay the RESP funds for expenses related to tuition, and books. You can also provide them with computers, laptops as and when needed for their higher studies. The Educational Assistance Payments can be used for all those education-related costs. But the thing is you have to provide some valid proof for that educational-related costs. Only with that, you can opt for the RESP fund and qualify for your chosen program. You don’t have to share the details of the money required for your education, but you have to show the enrollment proof. You can also go for buying a car for your child if he needs the same for going to classes. You can include the insurance, gas, maintenance and parking fees as well in the RESP fund. There are other eligible expenses for an RESP are like living expenses, rent, meals, electronic appliances related to study and other required fees. There is not an eligible list by the Canadian Government, but you have to show the list of expenses that how you are going to spend the RESP money for your child. On the other hand, if you have more than one child, then you can also transfer the RESP saving, grants from the Government into your other children’s RESP account until 21 years without any tax. And your other child is above 21 years, then you have to pay the tax and return CESGs as well. You can also think about donating the RESP investment to your school and institute. Benefits of Tutoring

8 Important Benefits of Tutoring for Your Child

As of the 2015-16 school year, the graduation rate in the U.S. was 84%. If that sounds pretty good, it's because it is. But, there's one area of education where kids still struggle -- STEM. Science, technology, engineering, and math industries are growing. In fact, it's expected STEM jobs will increase significantly by the year 2020. The Dept. of Education is going all-in on these crucial fields. In 2018, the DOE invested $279 million in STEM grants. Parents can help, too. How? With professional tutoring. The obvious benefit of tutoring is your child is more likely to get good grades. But what if your child already gets good grades? Are they being challenged? Are they developing critical thinking skills? Believe it or not, there are benefits of tutoring that go beyond grades. Take a look at eight of them below. 1. Child Gets Individual Attention: The average class size in the U.S. is 21.6 students. Doesn't sound too bad, but again, that's the average. States like Oregon come in with 26.7 students per classroom while Vermont averages 16.7. Even at 17 students per class, that's for one teacher. Doesn't a ratio of 1:1 sound much better? The advantage of tutoring is that your child gets individual attention. You can opt for a group-type tutoring program but most professionals offer one-to-one learning. 2. Distraction-Free Learning: It's easy for kids to get distracted. It happens quite often. With 20 others students in the class, it just takes one to throw off your child's focus. In a tutoring program, your child is able to focus on their work. They're able to invest 100% of their attention into each lesson plan. There are no bells ringing, kids laughing, extracurricular announcements -- it's only your child and their tutor. 3. Child Grasps Concepts at Their Own Pace: School districts and schools devise year-long lesson plans. There are certain criteria teachers need to cram in every week. There have state testing and subject exams to prepare their students for. But not everyone is ready to move on with their class. Some kids struggle during one area of a subject. In school, it's a bit of sink or swim. Tutoring allows them to take the time they need to understand the content. They do it at their own pace. For example, programs like Mathnasium draw up individualized plans that ensure your child understands what's taught in class. 4. Encourages Good Studying Habits: You encourage your child to pick up a book and study. Sometimes, they throw a fit. Other times, they may flat out refuse. Many kids don't like studying because they don't know how to study. Tutors give your child the tools they need to study more effectively. They'll learn study strategies for making the most of their time. You'll start to see your child is more organized. They'll have a study plan. They'll start learning and using active listening skills. You'll start noticing they find quiet places to study and do their homework. These are all behaviors they'll learn through tutoring. The chose online tutor or teacher should be flexible to work with your schedule and learning style. 5. Challenges Advanced Students: Tutoring has a bit of a negative connotation in the sense that people think it's only for struggling students. The truth is, tutoring is for everyone. The same way some kids fall behind, others jump ahead. Just like teachers can't abandon entire class plans to devote all their time to a struggling student, the same goes for those who are ahead. When a child gets ahead of the class, they can get bored. Parents enlist tutors to keep gifted children motivated. Because of the individual learning plans, the tutor will design lessons that challenge them. This keeps them interested in school and out of trouble. 6. Helps Children with Learning Delays: Not all students struggle because they don't understand what is being taught. Some children can't understand lessons due to learning delays. Yes, there are special education programs in the U.S. But, not every child has a medical or psychological diagnosis. In some cases, even when they do, the school district may not have a program designed to help their specific delay. Tutoring is a way to combat this issue. Some tutors are teachers who retired. Others have special qualifications to help kids with delays. This means they're able to assist your child to understand the concepts getting taught at school. With the individual plan and the ability to learn at their own pace, children with learning delays benefit greatly from tutoring. 7. Beats the Summer Blues: Every spring, your child starts to get a little antsy. They see the school year is winding down and may even mark the last day on their calendar. Their brains start focusing on summer fun. You may have done the very same thing when you were their age! Over the summer, we tell ourselves our kids need a break. They've worked hard all year and deserve a few months off. Except, the next grade rolls around and they're a little rusty. Without the constant pressure to read books and work on math, they regress a bit. It's called "summer learning loss." One way to ensure your child isn't affected is through summer tutoring. It's a refresher and primer course all in one. They'll go over what they learned in the previous year and get ready for what's next. 8. Improves Self-Esteem: One of the biggest benefits of tutoring -- if not the biggest -- is it improves self-esteem. Kids are sensitive. When they're struggling in a subject everyone else grasps, it makes them feel bad about themselves. They shouldn't -- everyone struggles at some point -- but it's hard to explain that to kids. Tutoring helps remove these feelings. Your child will start to see that no one's perfect. Everyone needs a little help sometimes. They'll also start to believe in themselves when they conquer challenging lessons. Over time, their confidence will grow. You'll see their grades start to improve. This boost in confidence may carry over to extra-curricular activities or social situations. Consider the Benefits of Tutoring: The benefits of tutoring go beyond grades. Tutoring improves how your child learns. This gives them the confidence to overcome obstacles -- both in school and out. It's important you know the proper steps to take to ensure your child has the best chance to succeed. Tutoring is one of them. Another one is knowing different learning methods. Check out four emerging trends in education. Modular Classrooms

The Essential Reasons Why Modular Classrooms May be Your Best Option

If your school is growing and you need extra space in the quickest possible time, there is a convenient and inexpensive solution which may be the ideal option for you. Modular classrooms have become the epitome of the modern classroom, and for good reason. As a school, you need to make sure that you properly invest your money, and modular classrooms allow you to make that much-needed investment which can be used and utilised in the shortest time and which can give you good value for your resources as well. Besides, modular classrooms are attractive and functionally-designed, and they can even serve to inspire students since they are a more innovative, novel, and interesting setting for learning. Here are the essential reasons why modular classrooms may be your best option. Save time and effort: The truth is that when you are running and operating a school, time can be of the essence. You cannot waste time on a traditional construction and building project, which can take more than a few months. If you go for a modular classroom, you can have a building in a shorter period of time – and with less expense as well. Since the construction of a modular structure is done off-site, your school grounds will not experience any disruptions, and the work on the structure can move forward without being affected by other factors such as the weather. And more than this – if you need to expand your modular structure in the future, you can easily do so. Modular building expansions are also quite easy to do, and you can add more structures as needed. You can even modify the space when necessary without having to go through an extensive or time-consuming (and costly) design and construction process. What else you can save with a modular classroom compared to a traditional building: If you opt for a traditional building for your classroom, you would have to think about many different factors. For one, you have to think about the design and planning permission for the building or structure. Another aspect you have to consider is the preparation of the site as well as the groundwork for the site, and this all takes time and a lot of effort and expense. Moreover, you have to think about the actual construction of the building (and be prepared for a lot of delays), and you have to think about the final inspection and whatever fixes may be necessary if the building does not fit your standards and expectations. But with modular classrooms, you have more than a few benefits. The design and planning permission is often already included, and the groundwork for the site and the site preparation is not such a time-consuming endeavour, either. The assembly takes place off-site in a controlled environment, which means a faster production and building time, and you don’t even have to worry about other details such as the construction of the frame of the building and the manufacturing of other components, since all of these will be done for you by the modular construction specialist. Global MBA

GMAT or GRE? Which is the Superior Choice for a Global MBA

GMAT stands for Graduate Management Admission Test and is conducted by a non-profit council of leading business schools, known as GMAC (Graduate Management Admissions Council). GRE stands for Graduate Record Entrance and is conducted by ETS (Education Testing Services), the world’s largest private nonprofit educational testing and assessment organization. Until 2011 GMAT was the test for master degrees in management (MBA, MiM, MSF etc), and GRE was the test for master degrees in core disciplines (MS in a range of science, arts, and humanities subjects). Then GRE underwent a major change of format and began to be accepted by almost all of the world’s main business schools. As a result, “GMAT or GRE” has become a major question. Exam formats: Both the GMAT and GRE test verbal, quantitative, and writing aptitude. However, the nature of their questions is different. The differences between the two are subtle but significant enough that the two tests require different preparation strategies. The GRE focuses more on memory testing, its verbal questions focus on vocabulary and its quant questions often require an almost direct application of formulae and concepts. The GMAT, by contrast, focuses on logical ability. GMAT verbal questions require more exact reasoning and its quant questions require an extended application of mathematical concepts. Scoring processes: The GRE maximum score was 2400, until 2002 when it was changed to 1600. At the moment, GRE candidates are scored on a scale of 260 to 340, with 327 being the approximate 90th percentile. GMAT candidates are scored on a scale of 200 to 800, with 700 considered to be the 90th percentile. While the GRE scoring has changed a lot; the GMAT scoring has been consistent, for decades. Both tests also have an analytical writing assessment, which is scored on a scale of 6. This score does not contribute to the candidate’s total score. Score interpretation: Most business schools are more comfortable with GMAT scores than with GRE scores. This is because they have been using GMAT scores for much longer and the GMAT scoring has remained consistent. Another reason is that the GMAT has a wider score range, which allows for a more accurate interpretation of the candidate’s standing. Most admissions to the US top 50 happen through GMAT: As per the official GMAC website, 90% of all enrollments in the top 50 United States business schools happen through GMAT. While GRE scores are just as valid as GMAT scores, the numbers do not lie. The top business schools have a clear preference for GMAT, as it is the preferred choice of serious MBA candidates and the one that they are more familiar with. Verdict: While there is no one correct answer, the facts are clear. For a variety of factors, mentioned above, the world’s leading business schools prefer to consider GMAT scores. This may be because GMAT, unlike GRE, was always meant to be a management admissions test. However, it is worth noting that with a high enough score the format will largely be overlooked. Extra tip: There is one scenario where GRE is better. For those who have not decided whether they want to pursue core discipline or management education, GRE’s versatility makes it a good option.
