Time Magazine Names Taylor Swift The 2023 Person Of The Year

Time Magazine has not wasted any time crowning Taylor Swift the Person of The Year for 2023. Global music icon Taylor Swift has been a news staple throughout the year. She is now all set to grace the red border periodical’s cover girl, adding yet another feather to her hat. She keeps proving each time that she is not going out of style any time soon.

Swift has been among the biggest musical acts around the world with her shrewd business acumen. She is seamlessly helming an entertainment empire that has collected $1 billion according to several estimates. Time editor Sam Lansky writes the piece.

He said, “But this year, something shifted. To discuss her movements felt like discussing politics or the weather —a language spoken so widely it needed no context. She became the main character of the world.”

Swift has been performing to huge crowds in her ongoing Eras Tour which will be continuing next year with international dates in cities such as Paris, London and Tokyo. One company has estimated that her U.S. leg of the tour alone could generate nearly $5 billion in consumer spending.

Additionally she has released a concert film called Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour which is a 3-hour IMAX movie culled from her Los Angeles performances that allows more fans to witness the show. The distributor, AMC theaters earned more than $250 million on the film as of late last month.

Swift’s sky-rocketing success both on and off screen will be to speak nothing of her personal life that has equally taken center stage. Her latest tryst with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has been highlighted more than ever before.

“When you say a relationship is public,” Swift told Time, “that means I’m going to see him do what he loves, we’re showing up for each other, other people are there and we don’t care.”

Swift has also inspired a big boost in voter registration with a single post on Instagram, she also played a part in the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Ticketmaster’s practices while making billboard history simultaneously. All in a year’s work and it isn’t even over yet.

Started by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862 : Also called the Medal of Valor in its beginning, the Medal of Honor was established in the young years of war. Lincoln gave the award to six soldiers for their exemplary performance in the Civil War. 2. Going Beyond the Call of Duty : The Medal of Honor goes beyond the normal call of bravery. Those who receive the award have sacrificed majorly. In fact, sixty percent of those who receive the award do so after they have already passed. Killed in action: the major sacrifice of a man for his fellow man. Others have been awarded for the likes of running into a fire to save a comrade; tossing away live grenades, and submersing themselves in extreme enemy fire to protect someone else. As former President Obama stated during a ceremony: "This is the stuff of which heroes are made. This is the strength, the devotion that makes our troops the pride of every American." Those who receive this award are the epitome of that strength and devotion. It's not your average soccer trophy. 3. Nineteen People Have Been Double Recipients of the Award : A whopping nineteen people were eligible not just once, but twice, to receive the coveted, valued Medal of Honor. With ranks covering the categories of Major, to Sergeant, all the way to a Fireman, these honorable few have sacrificed themselves in the most honorable of ways. Twice. 4. The President Always Gives the Award : A tradition which began when President Abraham Lincoln awarded the first Medals of Honor to six soldiers who were members of a raiding party that went headfirst into Confederate territory to destroy bridges and railroad tracks. The tradition continues to this day, as recently as our last two US Presidents having given Medals of Honor. 5. Over 3,400 Medals of Honor Have Been Awarded so Far : Since only 19 people have been awarded twice, that means that over 3,362 individuals have passed the honored test, risking their lives and going above and beyond what was expected of them. 6. Only One Woman Has Ever Received the Medal of Honor : Out of the whopping 3,400 recipients, only one woman has ever been awarded the medal. Her name was Dr. Mary Walker. As a prisoner of war for months, a women's doctor, and an outspoken feminist, President Andrew Johnson believed her to be honorable enough to deserve the medal. However, awarding Walker was controversial at the time, especially considering Walker was never a commissioned soldier. Her award was ultimately rescinded due to the fact of being a civilian - but in a classic, rightfully stubborn form, she held onto the award until she died! Later President Jimmy Carter actually re-issued the honor in her name. 7. Recipients Have Participated in 24 Different Battles and Wars : From WWI to WWII; Iraq and Afghanistan; the Korean War; Vietnam War; Civil War; and over a dozen others, US soldiers have paved the way for greatness across the board. When conflict strikes the US, we have a tendency to strike back harder. 8. There Are 71 Total Living Recipients Today : Of the 71 still living, most were members of the US Army, with Marines being second; the Navy third; and the Coast Guard fourth. One of the most recent awards was given to Forent Groberg in 2012 for tackling a suicide bomber. While serving in Afghanistan, this Army soldier was badly injured while sacrificing himself to save fellow soldiers (which he did). This ceremony marked only the 10th time that a living service member has been awarded the Medal of Honor for efforts in Iraq or Afghanistan. Seven other fighters in this conflict received the award posthumously, or after their passing. After tackling the bomber to the ground, the vest detonated, injuring but not killing Groberg, and therefore saving the lives of many. In true honorable fashion, when Groberg learned of his receiving the award, he dedicated it to his fellow soldiers. 9. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society : The Congressional Medal of Honor Society was started to create a brotherhood amongst recipients of the award Unlike most societies, the CMHS hopes to have no new members. New members mean that soldiers must take action in times of war. In this way, the CMHS prides itself on being exclusive to the 71 remaining soldiers. Honor Your Country : There's a reason why the Medal of Honor is the highest award that can be given by the US military. Those who receive the medal are members of an elite, exclusive society: those who could have, or did, die in the name of protecting their country and their comrades. Evolution of the U.S. Patent System

Patents have actually existed since the 1300s when an inventor was granted a right to a monopoly. While the specifics of the grants, the complexity of the issuing process, and the number of patents that exist have greatly expanded, the principle idea of the right has not changed significantly. However, we now have a robust industry of patent attorneys like Tampa’s The Patent Professor, a profession you probably wouldn’t have stumbled across in the Medieval times. Read more below about the evolution of the United States patent system to what we know it to be today: The Colonial Period: In the Colonies, there was no set patent process or a centralized patent office, since each colony operated essentially as a completely individual territory under the British monarchy. However, each colony issued “patents” on a case-by-case basis, with the first being issued to Samuel Winslow by the Governor of Massachusetts in 1641. Winslow was granted a 10-year monopoly on a particular method of harvesting salt. Adoption of the US Constitution: In Article 1, Section 8 of the United States Constitution, there is a provision that specifically addresses the protection of intellectual property. This was the first official mention of a patent in US documentation and signaled that the United States would support innovation with legal tools that allowed term-limited “monopolies” on registered inventions. The Patent Acts: 1790: 3 years after the adoption of the US Constitution by the newly formed United States, the Patent Act of 1790 was passed. It gave limited protections, a short, 14-year term for protection, and was found to be fairly unsatisfactory to most concerned citizens of the new country. It would only last a few years before being replaced. 1793: In 1793, the modern definition of a patent was introduced, and the application process was simplified. This Patent Act stood for over 50 years and granted over 10,000 patents before being updated once more. 1836: In 1836, a new Act was passed that formally established the United States Patent Office, whereas previous patent applicants had to appeal directly to the Secretary of State (and in the first Patent Act, to the Attorney General and Secretary of War as well). In addition, it created a database of all existing patents, available in public libraries, so that people could research before submitting their application to ensure that it was a truly original idea. Finally, it created the option for patent holders to extend from 14 to 21 years in some cases. Depression and Anti-Patent Sentiments: In the 1890 Depression, and again during the Great Depression, US citizens held an exceptionally negative attitude towards patents, and these sentiments led to the establishment of antitrust laws. These laws created limitations on the monopolies that major corporations were able to form and gave power back to the smaller players of the industry. The Modern United States Patent and Trademark Office: The Patent Act of 1952 created the current patent system as we know it today. It added additional stipulations for the final approval of a patent, such as ways that it could be infringed, explaining how it is useful and non-obvious, and other details that are still present in the application process to the USPTO. Patent law is constantly evolving, and as more patents and new technologies develop, you can be certain that they will continue to evolve, even more rapidly as the rate of innovation increases. In a recent development, YouTube has decided to discontinue its Premium Lite subscription plan, which had been on a two-year trial run. Subscribers to this lower-cost ad-free video viewing option will no longer have access to it after October 25th, 2023. Launched at €6.99 per month back in 2021, YouTube's Premium Lite was initially available in select European countries, including Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. The plan offered an ad-free viewing experience across all of YouTube's apps and formats. However, it did not include additional Premium features such as offline downloads, background playback, or access to YouTube Music. For existing Premium Lite subscribers, this discontinuation leaves them with two choices: return to watching YouTube with ads or upgrade to the pricier YouTube Premium, which includes YouTube Music. In an email to its users, YouTube stated, "We’re writing to let you know that after 25 October 2023, we will no longer be offering your version of Premium Lite. While we understand that this may be disappointing news, we continue to work on different versions of Premium Lite as we incorporate feedback from our users, creators, and partners." The discontinuation of Premium Lite has prompted disappointment among subscribers. Premium Lite might not have been widely known outside the select European regions where it was available, but for those who appreciated ad-free viewing without the added features of YouTube Premium, it filled a niche that's now left wanting.YouTube's decision to end Premium Lite leaves subscribers with important decisions to make regarding their viewing experience, and the move has sparked conversations about the evolving landscape of YouTube subscriptions.
